Traumatic hemothorax is a common and potentially life-threatening result of both blunt and penetrating thoracic injury.1 Management of traumatic hemothorax remains a challenging clinical problem with a range of treatment options.2 While open tube thoracostomy represents the traditional treatment of choice, failure to fully evacuate the hemothorax can lead to retained hemothorax, which is associated with poor clinical outcomes.3 Research to improve hemothorax outcomes includes defining which hemothorax patients may be safely observed, determining the smallest diameter tube for effective chest drainage, and exploring adjuncts to tube placement alone, such as thoracic lavage.4- 6
