Pediatricians possess the expertise to recognize an incredible range of illnesses, disease states, and developmental red flags. They’re also trained to make informed decisions about when specialized care is truly necessary. Knowing when a referral to a subspecialist is warranted is rooted in having a robust understanding of – and adherence to – clinical practice guidelines. Yet, these guidelines are underutilized by a large percentage of pediatricians. Empowering pediatricians to rely on established guidelines while also improving the interface of primary and specialty care in pediatrics is central to improving patient care outcomes.
