Research Article: Circulating growth-and-differentiation factor-15 in early life: relation to prenatal and postnatal growth and adiposity measurements

Date Published: 2023-05-08

Abstract:
Growth-and-differentiation-factor-15 (GDF15) is a regulator of energy homeostasis. To determine the relationship between circulating GDF15 and parameters of metabolic health, we assessed longitudinally GDF15 concentrations in infants born either appropriate- (AGA) or small-for-gestational-age (SGA), the latter population known to be at risk for metabolic alterations, particularly after a rapid postnatal catch-up in weight.

Introduction:
Growth-and-differentiation factor-15 (also known as macrophage inhibitory cytokine-C, MIC-1; or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug-activated gene-1, NAG-1) is a member of the transforming growth factor superfamily ?, and is secreted by the liver, kidney, and placenta, among other organs.1 Although its biological functions are not completely understood, circulating GDF15 appears to operate as regulator of energy homeostasis, as a biomarker of pathological conditions, such as cancer, inflammatory disorders,…
