Research Article: Comparison of Treatment Patterns in Patients with Migraine Initiating Calcitonin Gene-Related Peptide Monoclonal Antibodies: A Retrospective Real-World US Study
Abstract:
Migraine is a neurological disorder that negatively impacts health-related quality of life. Each migraine attack can last – hours accompanied by photophobia, phonophobia, nausea, and/or vomiting. Migraine is also a burdensome disease that impacts patients’ social and family relationships, along with work and school activities., In , there were . billion (.–.) prevalent cases of migraine worldwide, and overall prevalence in the US was % (% of women, and % of men). Migraine is classified as either episodic (EM; ? headache days per month) or chronic (CM; ? headache days per month for?> months). The use of new-generation migraine-specific drugs, the monoclonal antibodies against the calcitonin gene-related peptide or its receptor (CGRP mAbs), have been proven to be safe and effective in the prevention of EM and CM.– The American Headache Society (AHS) position statement recommends initiating CGRP mAbs in patients with low- (– monthly headache days with at least moderate disability defined as migraine disability assessment > and Headache Impact Test >) or high-frequency (– monthly headache days) EM or CM, and intolerance or inadequate response to at least two preventive migraine medications (for CM, intolerance and inadequate response is to a minimum of two quarterly injections of onabotulinum toxin A).
