Research Article: Clinical Significance of Preoperative Pyrazinamide-Containing Therapy in Tuberculous Constrictive Pericarditis
Abstract:
Constrictive pericarditis is a form of diastolic heart failure characterized by fibrotic and inelastic pericardium. Although the prevalence or overall incidence of constrictive pericarditis has been poorly established, it appears to be rare and life-threatening. The etiology of constrictive pericarditis varies according to countries, but tuberculosis (TB) remains a major cause worldwide, especially in developing countries.– Because constrictive pericarditis is chronic and progressive in most cases, conservative treatment such as diuretic therapy is only palliative. Pericardiectomy is indicated to remove the diseased pericardium but accompanied with high perioperative mortality rates.–
