Research Article: The Role of Emotion Regulation for General Self-Efficacy in Adolescents Assessed Through Both Neurophysiological and Self-Reported Measures
Abstract:
An individual’s beliefs in their own abilities and capacity to organize and execute the actions required to achieve a desired result constitute the concept of self-efficacy (SE). SE represents a positive youth developmental construct that has been found associated with reduced risk for adolescent psychopathology and higher academic achievement in several domains.– If people believe they have a personal sense of control, they are prone to a more proactive approach in their life. This is reflected in individuals with a higher sense of SE, as they seem to utilize metacognitive strategies to a greater extent, which further enhances self-regulatory capabilities., Self-efficacious students appear to work harder, persist longer in challenging situations, and are less anxious. A great body of research suggests that adolescent emotion regulation (ER) represents an important component in the relationship between SE and developmental outcomes.– However, the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying the relationship between ER and SE, and the development of adolescents’ SE beliefs in general, are still poorly understood.
