Research Article: Patient Perspectives on the Burden of Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction in a US Commercially Insured and Medicare Advantage Population: A Survey Study

Date Published: 2023-05-03

Abstract:
According to the American Heart Association (AHA), approximately million adults in the United States (US) lived with heart failure (HF) from to , and this figure is projected to rise to over million by . HF is the leading cause of hospitalization in older adults with nearly one million hospitalizations in the US annually, and is characterized by a high rate of mortality with one in every eight deaths related to HF. HF patients typically experience physical and mental health symptoms that have a significant impact on their health-related quality of life (HRQOL). Common symptoms of HF include dyspnea, fatigue, shortness of breath, edema, chest pain, depression, and anxiety, resulting in lower HRQOL and physical functioning limitations in carrying out activities of daily living. In addition to the clinical burden, HF is also associated with a substantial economic burden on both patients and the health care system. Healthcare expenditures are expected to increase to $ billion by the end of the next decade due to the growing prevalence of HF and the number of hospital admissions.
