Research Article: Neuroprotective Effects of Leptin on the APP/PS Alzheimer’s Disease Mouse Model: Role of Microglial and Neuroinflammation
Abstract:
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a complex neurological disorder of the central nervous system (CNS) with increasing cognitive dysfunction and behavioral impairment, resulting in death between and years after diagnosis. The neuropathological changes of AD brain include abnormal generation and deposition of A-amyloid (A?) peptides, either in A? or A? fragments, and hyperphosphorylated Tau protein clumps (neurofibrillary tangles) that are accompanied by astrogliosis and microglial cell activation. As a multifactorial disease, the prevalence and progression of AD are underpinned by a variety of contributing factors and complicated mechanisms. Besides genetic factors, aging, unhealthy lifestyles, obesity, etc. can directly or indirectly facilitate the occurrence of AD. So, it is a challenge to address its patho-physiology and thus therapeutic strategies because of the complexity of various processes and their interlinking between them.
