The worldwide spread of coronavirus (COVID-) led the Japanese government to declare a state of emergency on April , , followed by a nationwide declaration on April , . Consequently, access to the university campus was restricted and faculty and staff were strongly encouraged to work from home, thereby restricting research activities. Students were also required to stay at home, and the classes were conducted online.
