Research Article: A Comparative Study of Traditional Technique Guide versus Virtual Reality in Orthopedic Trauma Training
Abstract:
Surgical training for orthopedic residents can be hampered by limited training opportunities outside of the operating room. Passive learning tools such as standard guide techniques are often used as training modalities. However, technological advances are changing the face of medicine, and surgical training is at the forefront of innovation. These advances are designed to improve patient care and care delivery including advancing types and availability of surgical techniques. In today’s world, these advances transcend bedside to medical education. Innovations are designed to improve knowledge delivery in an expansive field and combat the challenges specific to surgery and medical education. In some cases, technology is borrowed from other arenas of daily living and re-purposed. This includes virtual reality (VR), first developed in the mid-s by Jaron Lanier. He initially worked to develop a multi-sensory stimulation tool to target the entertainment field. This technology was also being investigated in the science realm within NASA.,
