Date Published: 2023-10-06

Abstract:
Diabetes is a common medical problem worldwide. Over the past thirty years, the worldwide prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM) has been increasing. In Saudi Arabia, the prevalence of diabetes was .% in and is expected to reach .% in ; this would make Saudi Arabia the country with the third highest prevalence in the world, after Nauru and the UAE. The median prevalence of gestational DM (GDM) in the Middle East and North Africa is .% (interquartile range, .–.%). In Saudi Arabia, a large cohort study that included , women from the capital city of Riyadh revealed that the prevalence of GDM was .% (% CI: .–.%) and that of pre-existing DM was .% (% CI: .–.%). In a more recent study conducted on pregnant women in Saudi Arabia, the prevalence of GDM was found to be .%. With regard to pre-existing diabetes, a study conducted in Riyadh reported that (.%) out of pregnant women had pre-existing diabetes: % had type I DM and % had type DM. GDM and pre-existing DM in pregnant women are associated with maternal and neonatal risks such as preeclampsia, shoulder dystocia, the need for cesarean delivery, and neonatal macrosomia and hypoglycemia. Therefore, glucose monitoring and glycemic control are important in this group of patients.
