Research Article: Experience of Disease Acceptance in Chinese Patients with Newly Diagnosed Crohn’s Disease: A Descriptive Qualitative Study

Abstract:
Disease acceptance is a multidimensional concept. Initially, it was defined as acceptance of loss. This definition was further developed as a willingness to be present with one’s illness-related thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations without judging or making unnecessary attempts to control the disease. In the context of chronic illness, acceptance is defined as an awareness of the need to adapt to chronic illness, to tolerate the unpredictable and uncontrollable nature of the illness, to stop battling bodily discomfort, to actively refocus on other aspects of daily life and to integrate chronic illness into one’s life. From a psychological adjustment perspective, acceptance is primarily about adapting to the potential limitations and difficulties caused by the illness, maintaining an optimistic attitude, positively perceiving the benefits of the illness and restarting an active life. Disease acceptance is an important part of the illness process and a key factor in patients’ psychosocial adjustment, and high levels of disease acceptance promote better adjustment to illness and are important predictors of improved psychological well-being, treatment outcomes and enhanced quality of life.– For patients with chronic diseases, illness can persist for a lifetime, and accepting the disease is not easy.
