Research Article: Differential Characteristics of Patients for Hospitalized Severe COVID- Infected by the Omicron Variants and Wild Type of SARS-CoV- in China
Abstract:
Coronavirus disease (COVID-) is an acute fulminant infectious respiratory disease that spread rapidly worldwide.– Human-to-human transmission is the main route of spread for most COVID- infections, and its many mutations have raised concerns regarding its pathogenicity and ability to cause severe illness. There are now several variants of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-) virus, including Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, and Omicron variants, which vary in both temporal and regional distribution. Compared to the wild-type virus, the Omicron variants have several mutations in their spike (S), envelope (E), membrane (M), and nucleocapsid (N) proteins and were first identified in South Africa and Botswana on November , . The clinical characteristics of current predominant Omicron COVID- variants in China are different from those of the earliest epidemic strains, but comprehensive data on the subject is lacking. It is therefore crucial to compare their differences to develop better clinical strategies for their management.
