Research Article: Predictors of Cardiovascular Morbidity Among Adult Hypertensive Patients: A Cross-Sectional Study from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Abstract:
Hypertension, characterized by persistently high blood pressure, is an important public health issue that affects . billion people globally and is responsible for seven million deaths every year. Hypertension is regarded as a “silent killer” as hypertensive patients have a higher risk of life-threatening cardiovascular diseases (CVD) such as ischemic heart disease, stroke, peripheral vascular disease, heart arrhythmias and heart failure. Essential hypertension, responsible for –% of all cases of hypertension, is defined as persistently elevated blood pressure, ?/ mmHg, with no secondary cause identified. The remaining –% of cases of hypertension are secondary to other diseases such as renal diseases, hyperaldosteronism, Cushing syndrome, thyroid disease, coarctation of aorta, obstructive sleep apnea, pheochromocytoma, pregnancy, and certain drugs such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and sodium containing antacids.
