Research Article: Early Cytokine Signatures of Hospitalized Mild and Severe COVID- Patients: A Prospective Observational Study
Abstract:
The coronavirus disease (COVID-) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus- (SARS-CoV) became a pandemic affecting the population worldwide. While most patients remain asymptomatic and have a mild disease, some require hospitalization. The severity of the disease is largely dependent on age and the presence of comorbidities. The severe manifestation of COVID- is known to be mediated by several cytokines and chemokines. When the virus infects the lung cells by attaching to the ACE receptors, it activates the macrophages, natural killer cells, chemokines, and cytokines. Excessive production of inflammatory cytokines aggravates respiratory distress and causes extensive tissue damage in other organs. COVID- can trigger an uncontrolled release of cytokines, known as a “cytokine storm” which can lead to respiratory failure, multiple organ failure, and death. This systemic inflammation along with comorbid conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease results in the worst prognosis for COVID- patients.
