Research Article: Prevalence and Associated Factors of Anemia Among Hospital Admitted Patients in Eastern Ethiopia

Date Published: 2023-11-15

Abstract:
The majority of hospital admitted patients are adults and geriatrics (? years old) with chronic diseases and several comorbidities, which cause frequent hospitalizations. Anemia is one of the more prevalent comorbidities.– It is a condition in which the number of red blood cells (RBC) or hemoglobin (Hgb) concentration within them is lower than normal. Accordingly, it is diagnosed in non-pregnant women ? years old Hgb < . g/dl; men ? years old Hgb < .g/dl. Factors that contribute to the onset of anemia in admitted patients include nutritional deficiencies (iron, folate, and vitamin B), acute or chronic blood loss, chronic diseases, hemoglobinopathies, infectious diseases (malaria, tuberculosis, the Human Immune Virus (HIV), and parasitic infections), and even other unknown causes.
