Introduction:
Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a group of inherited red blood cell disorders caused by a mutation in the ?-globin gene that results in the polymerization of hemoglobin S (HbS). There are different forms of SCD, however the most prevalent and severe form is homozygous HbSS (sickle cell anaemia). In Saudi Arabia, SCD affects .% of the population, with another .% having the sickle cell trait. The Eastern province has the highest prevalence, with .% diseased and about % having the trait.
