Research Article: Gastroprotective Activities of Aqueous and % Methanol Leaf Extracts of Stephania abyssinica (Quart.-Dill. and A. Rich.) Walp. (Menispermaceae) in Rats
Abstract:
Peptic ulcer disease (PUD) is the most common gastrointestinal tract (GIT) disorder, affecting millions of people around the world, with an estimated incidence of –% in the general population. It is an acid-related GIT injury that usually affects the stomach and/or proximal duodenum and causes a mucosal breach that extends to the submucosa. A continuous exposure of the gastric mucosa to potentially aggressive agents such as gastric acid and pepsin, bile acids, food ingredients, Helicobacter pylori infection, and drugs like non-steroidal anti- inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) has been linked to the pathogenesis of peptic ulcers., Abdominal pain, bloating, burning sensation, nausea, vomiting, anorexia, hematemesis, and melena are some of the clinical symptoms, while bleeding, perforation, penetration, and gastric outlet obstruction are all life-threatening complications of PUD.
