Abstract:
Despite being uncommon cancer overall, nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) has a regional incidence of about – cases per , individuals in several endemic areas, especially Southern China (eg, Hong Kong) and Southeast Asia., Radiotherapy (RT) is the primary treatment for NPC, either alone or in combination with chemotherapy. Due to the proximity of the nasopharynx to the skull base, however, RT for NPC has various locoregional adverse effects, such as chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), hearing loss, eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD), and xerostomia. Specifically, the incidence of postirradiation otitis media and CRS can be even up to .% and .%, respectively. These local adverse effects, and the general toxicity of the treatment, seriously impact the health-related quality of life (QOL) of NPC patients. However, a comprehensive QOL scale specific to otorhinologic-related domains for NPC patients is limited.
