Research Article: Neural Tube Defect in a Resource Limited Setting: Clinical Profile and Short Term Outcome

Date Published: 2023-09-19

Abstract:
Neural tube defects (NTD) are severe congenital malformations of the nervous system that result from failure of fusion of the neural tube during early embryogenesis. They result from genetic mutations or maternal exposure to environmental factors including maternal folate deficiency, infections, and exposure to drugs like antiepileptic drugs and other teratogens. Folic acid deficiency accounts for about % of cases of NTD; and folic acid deficiency is highly prevalent in women of reproductive age in Ethiopia., NTDs affect approximately one in every births globally and their prevalence exceeds one in every births in low income countries where there is no adequate provision of folic acid to women of reproductive age.
