Abstract:
Peritoneal dialysis (PD), as a high-quality and cost-effective therapy, is one of the primary renal replacement therapy (RRT) modalities offered to patients with end stage renal disease (ESRD). It is estimated that more than , patients with ESRD received PD treatment worldwide in , representing approximately % of the global dialysis population., However, PD patients are prone to a condition known as malnutrition-inflammation-atherosclerosis (MIA) syndrome, in which malnutrition, pro-inflammatory cytokines, and atherosclerosis coexist and interact with each other. Factors related to dialysis such as PD catheter implantation, bioincompatible PD solution, peritonitis, as well as factors unrelated to dialysis, such as uremic toxins, oxidative stress, volume overload, and endothelial dysfunction, are prevalent in patients with PD. These factors collectively contribute to persistent systemic inflammation and malnutrition in PD patients and ultimately leading to a poor prognosis., Chronic inflammation has been considered vital for the pathogenesis of MIA syndrome, contributing to the progression of atherosclerosis and increased the risk of cardiovascular disease. Previous studies have reported that MIA syndrome is associated with higher all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in PD patients., Early assessment of the inflammatory state in PD patients is crucial for identifying individuals at a high risk of mortality.
