Abstract:
Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) has a multifactorial etiology, including biological and psychological inducers, which can lead to an inflammatory phenomenon. TMD involves the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), masticatory muscles, and associated structures and is characterized by acute or chronic pain. The symptoms of TMD include mandibular deviation during the opening, limited mandibular movements, headache, and TMJ pain. However, TMJ pain is the main reason patients seek treatment. The TMJ pain may be derived from its internal derangement during TMD, leading to an inflammation of the synovial membrane., This inflammation promotes macrophage/microglia activation in the TMJ, resulting in an increase in proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines followed by hyperexcitability of the nociceptive neurons.–
