Research Article: Cost-Effectiveness of Icosapent Ethyl (IPE) for the Reduction of the Risk of Ischemic Cardiovascular Events in Canada

Date Published: 2023-04-20

Abstract:
In Canada, cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the second leading cause of death after cancer and a leading cause of hospitalization., Ischemic heart disease (IHD), the most common form of CVD, is the first cause of years of life lost and the second leading cause of disability-adjusted life years lost., Early detection and management of CVD risk factors have contributed to reducing the burden of CVD in the last few decades, but despite the widespread use of statins, many patients have persistent residual CV risk. Studies have shown that rates of CV events remain high even among patients who are receiving recommended treatments for CV prevention.– In these patients, an elevated triglyceride level is believed to be an independent marker for an increased risk of ischemic events.– Medications commonly used to reduce triglyceride levels are extended-release (ER) niacin and fibrates; however, these have not proven to be efficacious in reducing CV events.–
