Research Article: Two Randomized, Double-masked, Placebo-controlled Studies of the Local Anesthetic Effect of Articaine Ophthalmic Solution

Abstract:
The authors conducted two, large, well-controlled clinical studies to evaluate the efficacy of a novel local anesthetic drug solution for use in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures of the eyes. The authors found the new drug solution was much more effective than a “placebo” solution. The most frequent adverse events were brief stinging and red eyes. This new drug, still investigational, may provide eye care professionals with an additional option for use in patients.

Introduction:
Eye-care professionals use topical ocular anesthetics for a myriad of uses in their clinical practice for numerous procedures – diagnosis, external disease surgery, and more recently, as the sole anesthetic for cataract surgery and for intravitreal injections. There are numerous local anesthetics available for clinicians.
