Abstract:
Epilepsy is one of the most common chronic neurological disorders, affecting many people in different parts of the world. Despite their differences, the terms epilepsy and seizure are often confused. As defined by the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE), epilepsy is a disease of the brain characterized by any of the following conditions: ) at least two unprovoked (or reflex) seizures occurring > h apart; ) one unprovoked seizure and a probability of further seizures similar to the general recurrence risk (at least %) after two unprovoked seizures, occurring over the next years; and/or ) the presence of an epilepsy syndrome, even if the risk of subsequent seizure is very low. Seizures are characterized by disturbed cerebral function caused by abnormal, excessive, and synchronous electrical discharges in groups of cortical neurons that may produce subclinical or various clinical phenomena.,
