Hopelessness is a psychological construct defined as negative expectations characterized by the feeling that one lacks control over events in the future and is a known risk factor for depression and suicide behavior., Hopelessness can either represent a personality trait or a state in response to negative events. It is a phenomenon associated with poor outcome that has been studied in the general population and in patients with several medical conditions, including cancer and ischemic heart disease.–
