Research Article: Prevalence of Bacterial Urinary Tract Infection, Associated Risk Factors, and Antimicrobial Resistance Pattern in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia: A Cross-Sectional Study

Date Published: 2023-05-16

Abstract:
Urinary tract infection (UTI) is commonly caused by bacterial pathogens that often affect the urinary system including the kidney, ureters, bladder, and urethra. The bacterial pathogens invade the urinary tract involving the lower and the upper urinary tract and may sometimes spread to the bloodstream resulting in several clinical syndromes such as fever, flank pain, dysuria and hematuria classified as cystitis (bladder infection), and pyelonephritis (kidney infection). Morbidity and mortality associated with UTI were shown to be million cases globally per year. In other instances, UTI may be presented as asymptomatic, where according to one report the prevalence was shown to be .% and .% in boys and girls, respectively. A % prevalence of asymptomatic Bacteriuria in women was also reported in another study., Of note, a considerable proportion of the recurrent UTIs in children, a rate of %, was reported by one study. Another report has also shown a recurrence rate of –% among children younger than years of age.–
