Date Published: 2023-12-22

Abstract:
Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) is a major public health concern worldwide. Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is the most predominant form of SDB, accounting for more than % of cases., The general prevalence of OSAS in the United States is approximately %. Obstruction or collapse of the upper respiratory tract occurs during sleep, resulting in apnea or hypopnea, which in turn causes hypoxia. In the long term, this condition is associated with serious sequelae, such as hypertension, cerebrovascular disease, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, and coronary heart disease. In addition, it increases the risk of chronic diseases, such as diabetes mellitus, male impotence, anxiety, and depression. The most serious risk is an increase in the probability of sudden death, which is . times higher in patients affected with OSAS than in an average person.
