Research Article: Determinants of Depressive Symptoms Among Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis in China: A Structural Equation Model

Date Published: 2023-10-17

Abstract:
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic systemic inflammatory disease that affects % of the global population. Chronic painful state of disease and undefined period of treatment severely imperil psychological well-being. Depression is the most common mental disorder in RA, with prevalence rates ranging from % to %. A recent systematic review and meta-analysis from China, which included studies for a total of Chinese RA patients, reported rates of % of depression. Various studies illustrate the negative effects of depression in the context of RA, including the low disease remission and treatment response, high levels of pain and disease activity, increased functional disability, reduced health-related quality of life, as well as increased mortality,, which add to the disease burden. These highlight that depression among RA patients should be paid more attention than it usually receives from health professionals, not only because it can improve mental health, but also because it can help to aid in management of physical aspects of the disease.
