Abstract:
In healthcare globally there is an increasing emphasis on interprofessional (IP) practice,, and correspondingly, an urgent need for academic institutions to respond with opportunities for students to learn and demonstrate competency in an IP context. A growing body of evidence shows how interprofessional education (IPE) is an innovative pedagogical approach towards ultimately improving health outcomes., An international consensus process has identified several themes as key areas of competency to develop in IPE: role understanding; interprofessional communication; interprofessional values; coordination and collaborative decision-making; reflexivity; and teamwork. This list is not dissimilar to the one provided by the National Interprofessional Competency Framework in Canada, that identified six CORE competency domains: ) interprofessional communication ) patient-centered care ) role clarification ) team functioning ) interprofessional conflict resolution, and ) collaborative leadership.
