Abstract:
Acute kidney injury (AKI) affects .% to .%, of all US hospitalized patients with up to .% presenting as moderate to severe,,, Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) stages to . Some patients recover within to days of AKI onset but in others, kidney dysfunction persists for up to days and may progress to acute kidney disease (– days) or chronic kidney disease (CKD, > days). Among those with stage – AKI, .% are likely to develop persistent severe AKI (PS-AKI), defined as stage AKI lasting ? days or with death in ? days or stage or AKI with dialysis in ? days. Duration of AKI and PS-AKI specifically has been linked to higher intensive care requirements, length of hospital stay, readmission rates, dialysis use, and death;,– nonetheless, testing for PS-AKI is not routinely done in clinical practice.
