Research Article: Identification of CXC Chemokine Receptor (CXCR) as a Novel Eosinophils-Independent Diagnostic Biomarker of Pediatric Eosinophilic Esophagitis by Integrated Bioinformatic and Machine-Learning Analysis
Abstract:
Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is an immune-mediated disease mainly featured by esophageal eosinophilic infiltration histologically as well as by esophageal dysfunction (ie, dysphagia and gastroesophageal reflux for children and adolescence) clinically., Current epidemiological evidence demonstrated an increasing incidence and prevalence of EOE among children in developed countries, from . per , per year in – to . per , across the US for –,, and from no cases in – to . per , in – according to European cohorts., The estimated / incidence rate was similar to that of pediatric Crohn’s disease. An inflammatory phenotype in childhood would progressively develop into a fibro-stenotic situation over time and an average delay of diagnosis of – years normally found in pediatric patients leads to elevated risk of esophageal stricture, for they are neither unaware of the illness nor acceptant to repeated endoscopy inspection burden. Moreover, eosinophilia in EoE is frequently patch, and at least four biopsies would be required. Therefore, identifying sensitive and specific diagnostic biomarkers for early and accurate EoE diagnosis prior to reaching an irreversible fibrosis stage is important to improving outcomes in the long run.
