Abstract:
Suicidality is a major public health problem globally. Every year, more than , people die by suicide, and it is estimated that one person dies every seconds. The coronavirus disease (COVID-) pandemic is one of the major risk factors impacting on suicidality.– Since the start of the COVID- pandemic, mental health professionals have been concerned about rising suicide rates, with warnings such as “Suicide epidemic triggered by COVID-” and “Dual pandemic of suicide and COVID-”. A meta-analysis examining suicidality during the COVID- pandemic found an increase rate for suicidal ideation (SI) (.%), suicide attempts (SA) (.%), and self-harm (.%) when compared to studies conducted prior to COVID- pandemic. Another meta-analysis revealed that the prevalence rate of SI among hospitalized and non-hospitalized populations was . (% CI: .–.) to . times (% CI: .–.) higher, while the prevalence of SA was also . times higher (% CI: .–.) to . (% CI: .–.) than the corresponding figures during the pre-pandemic period. Suicide is not only a leading cause of death among the general population, but also places a heavy burden on affected families, communities, and societies worldwide. Therefore, suicide prevention has become a global imperative especially during the COVID- pandemic. Furthermore, the mass lockdowns, social isolation, and economic consequences of the pandemic– might have resulted in an increase of physical and mental (ie, depression), behavioral (ie, panic buying), financial (ie, unemployment) and psychosocial (ie, racism) problems which could contribute to the risk of suicidality.,, Therefore, understanding the association between mental health problems (eg, depression) and suicidality during the pandemic is essential for developing the relevant public health strategies and guidelines to address these problems.
